An Act to ensure the provision of meteorological services in the Cook Islands

(19 June 1996

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in Session assembled and by the authority of the same as follows:

  1. Short Title and commencement

(1) This Act may be cited as the Meteorological Services Act 1995-96.

(2) This Act shall be deemed to have come into force on a date to be appointed by the Queen's Representative by Order in Executive Council.

  1. Interpretation

In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires –

"Minister" means the Minister responsible for meteorological services.
"Ministry" means the Government Department from time to time responsible for the administration of meteorological services.
  1. Meteorological services

(1) The Minister shall ensure the provision of the meteorological warning service referred to in section 4 of this Act.

(2) The Minister shall arrange for the provision of -

(a) the making and issuing of forecasts of the weather;
(b) the collection and recording of such meteorological information as is necessary for the purposes of paragraph (a) of this subsection;
(c) the conduct of meteorological research and investigation;
(d) the furnishing of advice on meteorological matters;
(e) the publication of meteorological information and the results of research and investigation;
(f) the making and issuing of forecasts of the weather and other meteorological conditions;
(g) the supply of meteorological information and expertise to the Crown or any person requiring such information and expertise.
  1. Minister to designate meteorological warning service

The Minister shall from time to time designate a person who shall be responsible to provide the authorised meteorological warning service in the Cook Islands.

  1. Charge for Services

The Ministry shall charge for meteorological services provided pursuant to this Act at a level prescribed by the Minister from time to time.
