DECREE NO. 1
FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS (AMENDMENT) DECREE, 1989
A DECREE TO AMEND THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS DECREE, 1988
IN exercise of the powers vested in me as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Fiji and acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, I hereby make the following Decree-
Short title
1. This Decree may be cited as the Fundamental Rights and Freedoms (Amendment) Decree, 1989.
Interpretation
2. In this Decree, the Fundamental Rights and Freedoms Decree, 1988 is referred to as "the principal Decree".
Section 14(3)(e) of the principal Decree amended
3. Section 14 of the principal Decree is amended by inserting the following words after the word "individual" but before the semi-colon at the end of paragraph (e) of subsection (3)-
"or whereby provision is made authorising the taking of measures reasonably necessary to achieve a proper and fair balance of advantage, of social development, of social advancement, of general welfare, of education and of opportunity for any person or groups of persons of such description as is mentioned in the last foregoing subsection".
Section 16 of the principal Decree repealed
4. Section 16 of the principal Decree is repealed.
