Turtles (Protection and Conservation) Regulations


TURTLES (PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION) REGULATIONS


Joint Rules 7 of 1974


To provide for the protection and conservation of turtles.


1. Offences

Every person who –


(a) keeps any live turtle out of water during any period exceeding 72 hours or causes any live turtle to be so kept out of water or in any other manner causes unnecessary suffering to such turtle;

(b) sells, exposes for the sale or export or causes to be sold or exposed for sale or export any turtle which has been embalmed by means of injection of formol or any other preservative substances;

(c) digs up or takes the eggs of any turtle or kills or takes any turtle while it is out of the sea; or

(d) sells, exposes for sale or causes to be sold or exposed for sale, any turtle, whether alive or dead, or any turtle egg,

shall be guilty of an offence against the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Cap. 78.


2. Regulations for conservation of turtles

The Minister may upon the advice of the Board of Management of the Vila Cultural Centre, the Veterinary Department and any organisation concerned with the protection of wildlife, by Order prohibit or restrict the killing of turtles either indefinitely or for any specified period or periods within any parts of Vanuatu or the territorial waters thereof.
